YOUNG READERS - HEARTLAND SERIES
|
This an interesting series about a young girl, her sister and grandfather who live on a farm
called Heartland in Virginia. Taking a cue from the natural horsemanship and horse whispering
trend, Lauren Brooke has created a world where horses are cared for and treated with natural
and behavioral treatments
So far the series has been pretty intriguing for me as an adult. The only flaws are those typically
found in horse books - the tear jerker, the miracle cure and conflict between a rival stable. Another
flaw to the books is that one generally has no way of knowing if the cures given to the horses in the
book are actually something that would work; it seems a little on the fanciful side. On the other hand,
the conflict between the main character, Amy, and her older sister, Lou, is very enjoyable - Amy being immature
and a dreamer, while Lou is older and more practical.
The books do not moralize, however, and if anything, are a gentle way of showing that there are different
training methods for horses.
