Of all the draft breeds, the Clydesdale is constantly in the spotlight. There is a hardly a parade without a pair of them and the Budweiser Clydesale are emblazoned on everything from advertising to art. The horses originate in the Clyde Valley of Scotland. Like most horse breeds, farmers looked to breeding a larger and better quality horse. Native horses tended to be small. Shires, Friesian and Beligians were used to build the breed. Clydesdales have a flamboyant style all their own. At around 18 hands high, they are usually brown, chestnut, bay or black. "High white" markings are often found (this is not pinto). |
